Poipu Beaches

Poipu Beach Park is an additional two-minute walk past Brennecke's and offers several ocean options: a beach for young children with shallow calm conditions and a new playground, a swimming bay, and notable surfing and snorkeling areas beyond the park. The grassy park area is equipped with covered beach pavilions, showers, rest rooms, and tables for picnics and and outdoor barbecues. Lifeguards are on duty daily.

Shipwreck's Beach is on the eastern end of Poipu. Here bodysurfing, body boarding, surfing are for experts only. The main attraction is the 2-mile trail which starts at beach and parallels the shore line. Dramatic windswept views of pristine shoreline provide an incredible backdrop for a spectacular hike. Whale watching is at its best from this vantage point from winter to spring. Sea life abounds with turtles, porpoise, and Hawaiian monk seals. Shoreline fishing is good year-round with no license required. It's amazing just to watch schools of akule (big eye scad) being chased by predators (trevally, amber jack, barracuda, skip jack tuna).

Mahaulepu is a spectacular remote area about a two mile drive from the end of Poipu Road on the dirt road. Activities here include windsurfing, kite sailing (one of the top spots on this island), hiking, fishing (can be good in the summer months), snorkeling, and swimming.

Additional recreational activities available in the Poipu area include scuba diving , kayaking, horseback riding, bicycling, and tennis. Two challenging golfcourses, Poipu Bay Golf Course, home of the PGA's Grand Slam of Golf, and Kiahuna Golf Club are within a five-minute drive. The National Tropical Botanical Garden Visitors Center with its beautifully landscaped grounds is right across from Spouting Horn, another island landmark. Two nearby hotels welcoming visitors to their restaurants, shops, and fitness facilities are the Sheraton Kauai and the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa.
